The disposable camera look on iPhone, from RAW

·

The disposable camera look is a flash that flattens everything, soft plastic-lens corners, grainy consumer film and a lab scan with too much contrast. Each part has a cause, and each can be recreated on an iPhone. Do it on RAW and you can dial it up or down after the shot instead of living with a filter.

What makes the look

How to get it on an iPhone

  1. Use the flash. This is the one thing no film or filter can fake. Turn on the iPhone's flash and shoot a subject close to you, in a dim room or at night.
  2. Shoot RAW. A flash photo has clipped highlights and deep shadows. RAW holds more of both, so the look you add later has something to work with. See RAW vs HEIF for a film look.
  3. Pick a consumer-negative film. In Chobial, start with Negative (hard contrast, teal greens, deep reds, warm highlights) or Vintage (old print colour, heavy grain, soft detail). Gold also leans warm.
  4. Add grain. Grain is part of the character. Chobial's grain is modelled on real stocks, which is why it doesn't look like noise: why digital grain looks fake.
  5. Add a little vignette in the film editor for the dark plastic-lens corners. A small amount is enough.

Disposable camera apps vs RAW

Apps such as Dispo, Huji Cam and Dazz Cam offer disposable or vintage-camera looks ready-made. That's the point of them, and if you want exactly that, they're fine. The trade-off is that the look is usually fixed. On a RAW negative the look is separate from the photo, so you can try Negative, then Vintage, then your own film on the same shot.

There's more on the related digital-camera look in make iPhone photos look like a digicam, and a wider guide in make iPhone photos look like film. For the concept behind all of these, see film simulation on iPhone.

Dispo, Huji Cam and Dazz Cam are the names of other makers' apps. Chobial is not affiliated with them.

Questions

What gives a disposable camera photo its look?

Four things: a direct flash that flattens faces and throws hard shadows, a cheap plastic lens that's soft at the edges and vignettes, consumer colour negative film with visible grain, and a quick lab scan with a lot of contrast.

How do I get the disposable camera look on an iPhone?

Use the iPhone's flash, shoot RAW, develop it with a consumer-negative film that has hard contrast and warm highlights, then add grain and a little vignette. Chobial's Negative and Vintage films are good starting points.

Is there a disposable camera app?

Yes, several. Dispo, Huji Cam and Dazz Cam offer disposable or vintage-camera looks ready-made. If you want to tune it, or change it after the shot, a film editor on RAW gives you the controls.

Does Chobial have a flash or a date stamp?

Chobial's films don't simulate a flash or stamp a date on your photo. It uses the iPhone's own flash, and its films, grain and vignette supply the rest of the look. Photo frames and collage captions can print the date, including an orange Date Stamp caption on collages.

Why does flash photography look so harsh?

The flash sits right next to the lens, so it lights the subject head-on. That removes the shadows that give a face shape, makes skin shiny, and throws a hard shadow on the wall behind.
