Chobial vs Moment Pro Camera: a fair comparison

Checked ·

Moment Pro Camera II is Moment's rebuilt pro camera for photos and film-making: deep manual controls, a waveform, Apple Log and ProRes, and your own .cube LUTs live in the viewfinder, all for one price. If you shoot video as much as stills, it's a great choice. Chobial is a stills camera for a different wish: to make the film yourself, keep it with the RAW, and use it on any photo you've ever taken.

And Halide?

If you're weighing Halide against Moment: Moment imports your own LUTs and shoots Log and ProRes video for a single payment, while Halide has no LUT import, leaves video to Lux's separate Kino app, runs on iPad and lets you re-develop its RAW files with Lux's curated Looks. Chobial differs from both in letting you make the look itself. See Chobial vs Halide.

Questions

Is Moment Pro Camera II a subscription?

No. It's US$9.99 once on the App Store, with no in-app purchases today. Moment's FAQ says all future updates are included, and that optional Look packs may come later as in-app purchases.

Does Moment Pro Camera II put my LUT on RAW photos?

No. Moment's owner's manual says LUTs can be applied to photos except RAW and ProRAW, so the LUT you see while shooting RAW isn't kept in the file. In Chobial the film stays with the RAW, and you can change it later.

Can I use both?

Yes. Moment saves standard RAW and ProRAW files, and Chobial opens RAW files from other apps and cameras, so you can shoot in Moment and develop the DNG with any Chobial film. A film you make in Chobial can also be exported as a .cube and imported into Moment as a LUT.
